My name is Sonja West, and I am a student and a research assistant at the University of Kansas. I live in Topeka, Kansas, and am committed to supporting justice-involved women in accessing a higher education.
I adore gardening and my 2-year-old dachshund, named Buster, because they both give me peace of mind.
I have overcome years of trauma and addiction. I strive to use my experiences to mentor others. I also aim to help others facing similar challenges.
I share my story and continually learn new strategies to support others. I hope to make a meaningful difference for those working to overcome their own obstacles.
My journey began after a friend encouraged me. She suggested taking courses at the KU Center for Digital Inclusion. This happened after several encounters with the legal system.
Before enrolling at the KU Center for Digital Inclusion, I operated a small lawn care business for five years.
The KU CDI program inspired me to pursue a higher education and a college degree. It guided me through the college enrollment process. Its support inspired my commitment to helping others on their journeys.
Recognizing the declining demand for skilled labor, I realized the importance of developing digital skill to secure quality job opportunities.
I completed all phases of the KU CDI program. Then, I connected with an academic advisor with KU TRIO. They helped guide my academic path.
I began pursuing my degree online at Allen Community College in fall 2023. I graduated with an Associate of Science in Business Administration in December 2025.
